What Is Coaching?
Coaching is a professional relationship that helps people break through their limitations to achieve extraordinary results in their lives, careers, businesses or organizations. The process of coaching encourages clients to deepen their learning, improve their performance, and enhance their quality of life through self-discovery and self-empowerment. In each meeting, the client chooses the focus of conversation, while the coach listens and contributes with observations and questions. This interaction creates clarity and moves the client into action. Coaching accelerates the client’s progress by providing greater focus and awareness of choice. Coaching concentrates on discovering and clarifying goals, and eliciting strategies and solutions to get the client on track to achieve their future goals at a pace that is achievable for the client. As certified coaches, we recognize that results depend on the client’s intentions, choices and actions as they are supported by the coach’s efforts and application of the coaching process.
What Is A Coaching Session Like?
As you would guess, each session will vary since it is driven by the client’s goals and needs at that time. Still, there are lots of predictable elements. Here’s a short list:
- Sessions are 50 minutes in length. They could be less, if a breakthrough is made and the client wants to process it right away.
- Sessions are conducted through Zoom, a secure and private online meeting place. We take care of that so you don’t have to.
- Sessions are recorded (encrypted) and provided to our clients, at no charge. They are stored in an encrypted vault and shared via en encrypted link. This way our clients can rest easy our conversation was private, will always be private, but can access them for reference.
What Are Session Goals?
Our objectives as your coach include:
- Guiding you to create a crystal clear vision for the kind of life, relationships or business you want…and steps to get it fast.
- We’ll uncover hidden challenges that may be sabotaging your success with reaching your goals and aspirations and…
- You’ll leave each session renewed, re-energized and inspired to finally have the life, personal or professional, that you have always wanted.
What Coaching Is Not
Coaching is not another name for therapy or counseling. It’s an entirely different process. See the next FAQ entitled, “Coaching Disclaimer” for a detailed explanation.
You are advised that there are clear boundaries surrounding the responsibilities between coaching and psychotherapy, counseling, or other medical treatments in psychology and psychiatry.
Specifically, coaching involves providing education and guidance to those seeking to learn and implement a self-directed discovery process respecting their own lives.
However, it is important to understand that this is different than psychotherapy, counseling, or other medical treatments in psychology and psychiatry. While both utilize knowledge of human behavior, motivation and behavioral change and interactive techniques, the major differences are in the goals, focus, and level of professional responsibility. Psychotherapy, counseling, or other medical treatments in psychology and psychiatry are health care services and are usually reimbursable through health insurance policies and require licensed health care professionals with accredited training to render. This is not true for coaching.
The focus of coaching is development and implementation of strategies to reach client-identified goals of enhanced performance and personal satisfaction. Coaching utilizes personal strategic planning, values clarification, brainstorming, motivational skills, and other similar techniques. However, coaching does not encroach into the areas involving use of skills that only licensed professionals are permitted to deliver.
Coaching does not diagnose or treat mental health disorders. It is your responsibility to manage your own mental health, including obtaining necessary exams and ongoing support as needed. Coaching should be seen as a supplement to such a support system, but not as a replacement for it.
In situations where you are under the care of a professional counselor or medical practitioner and conflict arises between the recommendations of those professionals and your coach, you have the responsibility to follow the guidance of the professionals.
Do You Use An Agenda?
Yep. We use an agenda. But that sounds much too official. It’s nothing more than a sheet we use, as your coach, to make sure that we’re helping you move forward. We use it to review our previous sessions, celebrate and remind you of your successes, set desired short-term outcomes, and agree to your next action steps.
How Do I Start?
Great question! We start with an informal pre-coaching consultation. This is basically an online meet-and-greet. There’s no charge for this meeting, which is 30-minutes long. We’ll talk about what you’d like in a coaching relationship. We’ll share with you what our strengths are and how we think we can help you make progress. We’ll be happy to refer you elsewhere if we don’t believe we’re the best fit for you. We’ll share with you a little about the tools and resources we might use. And, of course, we’ll answer all your questions, including those about accountability, expectations, fees and payment terms.

Our Philosophy of Coaching
Our approach to coaching honors the client as the expert in their own life and work. We believe that every client is creative, resourceful, and capable. We believe it is the coach’s responsibility is to:
- Discover, clarify, and align with what the client wants to achieve
- Encourage client self-discovery and self-empowerment
- Elicit client-generated solutions and strategies
- Hold the client responsible and accountable
Our Professional Conduct Commitment
This is our professional commitment to our clients:
- We will be responsible for setting clear, appropriate, and culturally sensitive boundaries that govern any physical contact that we may have with our clients.
- We will construct clear agreements with our clients, and will honor all agreements made in the context of professional coaching relationships.
- We will ensure that, prior to or at the initial session, our coaching client understands the nature of coaching, the bounds of confidentiality, financial arrangements and other terms of the coaching agreement.
- We will respect the client’s right to terminate coaching at any point during the process.
- We will be alert to indications that the client is no longer benefiting from our coaching relationship, and recommend terminating the agreement.
- If we believe the client would be better served by another coach, or by another resource, we will encourage the client to make a change.
Client Welfare: The physical and mental well-being of each client a prime consideration.
Client Safety: We do not engage in verbal, physical or emotional abuse of any client.
Practice Limits: We coach each client within the limits of our training and competence and in conformity to the laws of our state.
Reasonable Practice: We will withhold coaching if a client’s behavior, appearance or statements would lead a reasonable person to believe that the client should be evaluated by a licensed health care professional.
Conflicts of Interest: We seek to avoid conflicts between our interests and the interests of our clients.
